Crystals Made Simple: How to Choose, Cleanse & Connect

One of the questions I hear most often is, “How do I choose a crystal?” Closely followed by “How do I cleanse it?” and “Now what do I do with it?”

The beautiful thing is … there isn’t just one right answer.

Working with crystals doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating. In fact, I think the simplest approach is often the best. Whether you’re buying your very first crystal or adding another special piece to your collection, I encourage you to trust yourself and enjoy the experience.

Choose What Calls to You

When you’re shopping for a crystal, whether you’re strolling through a crystal shop or browsing online, give yourself permission to slow down.

As you look through different crystals, notice which one keeps catching your eye. Is it the color? The sparkle? The unique shape or pattern? Maybe you can’t explain why, but you find yourself clicking back to the same crystal again and again.

One of the biggest myths about choosing crystals is that you have to hold one in your hand before you can truly connect with it. I don’t believe that’s true.

I’ve found that we don’t need to physically hold a crystal to feel drawn to it. Sometimes that connection begins the moment you see its photograph. You may feel excited, peaceful, curious, or simply think, “I can’t stop looking at this one.”

Trust that feeling.

Whether you’re shopping in person or from the comfort of your home, your intuition can still guide you. In fact, some people find that shopping online allows them to focus even more on what naturally draws them in, without the distraction of dozens of crystals surrounding them.

And sometimes, the simplest reason is the best one; you just love the way it looks. That’s a perfectly wonderful reason to bring a crystal into your life.

You don’t have to know every metaphysical property or memorize what each crystal is “supposed” to do. Let yourself be curious, enjoy the process, and trust what resonates with you. Often, the crystal that captures your attention is exactly the one that belongs in your collection.

Cleansing Your Crystal

Ohhh … this is where things get interesting because there are so many ways people like to cleanse their crystals!

My favorite ritual starts with smudging. I’ll gently pass my crystals through the smoke of sage and then follow with palo santo. For me, it’s less about perfection and more about creating a quiet moment of intention before I begin working with a new crystal.

I also love using sound. A singing bowl is one of my favorite tools, but a bell, drumming, chimes, or even clapping your hands can work beautifully. Sound has a way of shifting the energy in a space and helping me feel present.

Another simple option is to let nature lend a hand. Many people enjoy placing their crystals in the sunshine or under the full moon’s light. Just remember that some crystals can fade with extended exposure to direct sunlight, so it’s always worth checking before leaving them outside for too long.

However, you choose to cleanse your crystals, let it be something that feels meaningful to you. Your intention matters more than following someone else’s rules.

Connecting with Your Crystal

Once I’ve cleansed a new crystal, I like to spend a few quiet minutes meditating with it.

I simply sit, breathe, and hold the crystal while setting an intention. Sometimes nothing remarkable happens, and that’s perfectly okay. Other times, I leave feeling calmer, more centered, or with a fresh perspective.

If meditation isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to connect.

Place your crystal on your nightstand and see what unfolds. You might notice especially vivid dreams or wake up with one of those wonderful “Aha!” moments that suddenly make everything click.

You can also keep a crystal on your desk while you work, carry one in your pocket, or place one somewhere you’ll see it every day. Over time, it becomes more than a beautiful mineral; it becomes a gentle reminder to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.

There Is No Perfect Way

If there’s one thing I’d love for you to remember, it’s this: there is no perfect way to work with crystals.

Let yourself be curious. Explore what resonates with you. Enjoy their beauty, appreciate their incredible journey from deep within the Earth, and allow your own relationship with them to develop naturally.

The more you trust your own intuition, the more meaningful your crystal journey becomes.

After all, crystals have been forming for millions of years. They’re in no hurry, and neither should we be.
