Mindful Mornings: Finding Calm Amid the Chaos of a Busy Mind

This morning, as I walked into my office, my mind was buzzing with the leftover static of yesterday’s worries. Like too many crowded voices trying to speak at once, the thoughts swirled, some louder than others: unfinished to-dos, unresolved conversations, and worries that seemed to have set up camp in my head overnight. But then, something quietly demanded my attention—the soft glow of sunrise peeking through the window.

In that instant, I stopped. I allowed myself to be fully present, letting go of my mental grip. I took a slow, deep breath. My eyes followed the unfolding masterpiece painted across the sky—hues of fiery orange melting into gentle purples and rays of light stretching over rooftops and trees. The colors shifted as I moved through the room, each glance revealing new layers of beauty and warmth. I felt the heat of my Earl Grey tea seeping through my fingers as I held the mug close, its delicate bergamot fragrance rising in the steam, grounding me even further.

For a few precious moments, I noticed. I noticed how my thoughts loosened their hold when I chose not to cling to them. I noticed that acknowledging the chaos in my mind didn’t mean allowing it to stay. With all its fleeting wonder, the sunrise reminded me that thoughts are like passing clouds—they come and go, and we are not bound to keep them overhead. I let mine float away.

That brief moment of mindfulness changed everything. My perspective softened. A wave of calm washed over me, allowing me to approach my day with more clarity. I realized how powerful a simple pause can be and how it can transform my energy into something lighter and more intentional.

I am so grateful for being introduced to mindfulness over 40 years ago. This practice has been a steadfast companion, guiding me through life’s highs and lows and teaching me how to find peace in the present moment. It has been a journey of learning to pause, breathe, and truly see—not just the beauty around me but also the stormy thoughts within me and how to let them drift away. Mindfulness has transformed my life, one breath and one moment at a time.

Here are 5 simple tips to help you practice letting go of thoughts and becoming more present:

     1.   Breathe Deeply and Fully: Take a moment to breathe slowly and deeply, focusing on the sensation of air entering and leaving your lungs. This anchors you in the present moment and helps clear the mental fog.

     2.   Engage Your Senses: Notice the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures around you. Bringing awareness to what you can perceive grounds you in the now, away from racing thoughts.

     3.   Label Your Thoughts: Without judgment, acknowledge what you’re thinking by giving your thoughts gentle labels like “planning,” “worrying,” or “remembering.” This can create distance and prevent you from getting stuck in loops.

     4.   Find a Mindful Anchor: Whether it’s the warmth of a beverage, the weight of your body on a chair, or the sight of something beautiful like a sunrise, use a physical sensation or object to bring you back to awareness whenever your mind drifts.

     5.   Practice Gratitude for the Present Moment: Take a moment to express gratitude for something happening now—no matter how small. Gratitude shifts focus away from what we cannot control toward the moment’s gifts.

What’s one thing you can mindfully do today to let yesterday’s drama, worries, and icky feelings fade away, just like this morning’s sunrise?

With blessings and deep gratitude,

Judy
